‘Come, let us worship and bow down. Let us kneel before the Lord our maker.’ – Psalms 95:6
We’ve probably all stood in a church, awkwardly singing along to some song on the screen or from the band, wondering why this is so boring.
Truth is, if that was you, you were not really worshipping then! Worship unto God is NOT a Christian karaoke or sing-along. The original Greek word for worship is ‘proskyneo’, which literally translates to ‘to kiss’. It just means to have a posture of submission and acknowledgement of God’s power.
The Hebrew word, ‘schachah’, can be translated to many different modern words, such as obey, submit, dedicate, to follow, surrender, trust, humble.
Worship can look different for all of us. It can be rejoicing-making a joyful noise to God to thank Him for His love. It can be a thankful prayer, expressing your gratitude for His mercy. It can simply be remembering how He died on the cross for our sins. Or it can be a quiet surrender and laying down of your heart and mind to Jesus.
It’s important to truly worship God in spirit and in truth – don’t just go through the motions. Although music is a great tool to utilise and improve worshipping, it doesn’t define worshipping. We can worship God with moving our bodies, with using our talents and giftings, or spreading His good news to others.
What is Worship?
Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving me freedom to live out my love for You. Please show me how I can honour You through worship, so that I can eventually lead other people to God through my worship. Amen.
Challenge: Try to find a way to worship God that you never tried before. Paint a picture of His creation, sing a new song to Him, or express your love with a dance like King David.
