‘A devious person spreads quarrels. A gossip separates the closest of friends.’ – Proverbs 16:28
For many people, gossiping is so natural that they do it without realising they are doing something wrong. It is one of man’s main guilty pleasures.
One has an innate urge to know more about other people’s lives. Not only is it interesting, but it also serves as a means to compare ourselves with others.
In Proverbs, we are reminded that gossiping brings distance between people and especially between friends. Instead of gossiping about your friends, talk about them in love. Try to see the good in your friends and not just highlight the bad.
Jesus wants us to live in peace with each other and encourage rather than tear down. Instead, ask God to put a guard in front of your mouth before your harsh words sow distance between friends.
Think Before You Speak
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for allowing me to use words that build lives. Please help me to be the light in the darkness, and I will use my tongue to build Your kingdom. In the name of Jesus Christ, I ask this, Amen.
Challenge: When talking with someone and it leads to gossip, stop and share something positive. Pray for the person rather than gossip about them.
