Temptation or Test?

‘Stay awake and pray that you won’t be tempted. You want to do what’s right, but you’re weak.”’ – Matthew 26:41

Often, we confuse temptations with tests of faith, even though they are fundamentally two different things.

Consider this example: It’s your best friend’s birthday party. Someone brings alcohol with or it’s readily available. The temptation to drink may be strong. Just one drink can lead to excessive drinking and even regrettable actions. A fleeting pleasure can result in lasting consequences. This is temptation and does NOT come from the Lord.

On the other hand, a practical example of a test of faith we encounter regularly is the loss of someone dear to us. We may question where the Lord was in our suffering during such times. It’s tempting to “lose” faith in these moments, or so it seems. In reality it is a test, and when we navigate it with faith intact, our perspective on loss and death evolves, granting us inner peace.

Remember, the Lord has favorable intentions for you, even when circumstances appear bleak. Live honorable and place your trust in Him. If “anyone” understands what they are doing, it’s certainly the Lord!

Temptation or Test?

Prayer: Dear Lord, grant me the discernment to differentiate between what comes from You and what does not. May my life be a testament to Your glory, and may I trust You wholeheartedly, regardless of my challenges. I ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Challenge: The next time you contemplate giving up on the Lord due to difficult circumstances, remember that He never abandons you when you’re tempted. Seek solace in prayer with a fellow believer.
