‘I said to the Lord, “You are my Master! Every good thing I have comes from you.”’ – Psalms 16:2
A self-image is essentially the perception you hold of yourself. It’s influenced by your own view of yourself, how others perceive or interact with you, and your interpretations of how others might perceive or interact with you.
Low self-esteem entails a lack of positive regard for oneself, often leading to sadness and insecurity. This can hinder your ability to establish and pursue personal goals. Have you ever been so apprehensive about failing that you hesitated to undertake a new challenge? Have you ever felt the urge to give up even before you start?
On the one hand, low self-esteem is the opposite of pride. On the other hand, it is again a form of pride. Low self-esteem should not be used as an excuse for other people to feel sorry for you or you trying to get attention through it.
How can you align your self-image with your faith in God? Rather than fixating on yourself, direct your focus towards God. God intends for you to live without harbouring low self-esteem. Your self-worth isn’t tied to your actions and your identity in Christ. Embrace humility before Him, and He will bestow honour upon you.
For a Christian, self-value emanates from maintaining a righteous relationship with God. You hold inherent worth due to the tremendous cost paid on the Cross—God’s sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ, symbolises this.
Self-Image and God’s Perspective
Prayer: Father, I express my gratitude for redeeming me through Jesus, sacrificing Your blood, and deeming me deserving. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Challenge: At the start of each day, stand before your reflection in the mirror and say aloud… In Jesus, I am sufficient; I can thrive, and His love surrounds me.
