Self-Forgiveness Is Critical

‘Get rid of your bitterness, hot tempers, anger, loud quarreling, cursing, and hatred.’ – Ephesians 4:31

Have you ever been walking down the street, and suddenly a moment from your past pops into your head, making you stop in your tracks with deep regret? I know I have. It’s called unforgivenes. This happens when we hold ourselves accountable for something we did or said that we wish to change.

One memory that always makes me cringe is when my band performed. In the performance in one of the songs I wrote myself, I forgot the 2nd verse. I felt so humiliated and ashamed. Even worse the feelings come back every time I think about it.

But the truth is, we don’t have to hold onto those regrets forever. In Ephesians 4, Paul reminds us to let go of bitterness, anger, and malice, including forgiving ourselves for our mistakes. It’s not just about forgiving others; it’s about forgiving ourselves too.

So, the next time you find yourself stuck in a moment of regret, remember that holding onto those feelings only slows you down from getting closer to God. Make a habit of self-forgiveness and let go of those things that weigh you down. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it.

Self-Forgiveness Is Critical

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for being patient with me. Help me to forgive myself because I feel so guilty. Help me to be free from this burden. I ask it in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Challenge: Take some time today to think about something you’ve been holding onto that’s been weighing you down. It could be a mistake, a hurtful word you said, or something someone else did to you. Whatever it is, decide to let it go and forgive yourself. Write it down, say it out loud, or pray about it. Take that step towards self-forgiveness and see how it sets you free.
