“I am the Road, also the Truth, also the Life. No one gets to the Father apart from me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him. You’ve even seen him!” – John 14:6
Right at the beginning of the story of Jesus’ life, in Matthew 1, an angel appears to Jesus’ father, Joseph, to share with him that Mary had “Spirit-conceived” a child. The angel tells Joseph to name the baby Jesus “—‘God saves’—because He will save his people from their sins.”
Jesus’ name literally means salvation! “Salvation comes no other way; no other name has been or will be given to us by which we can be saved, only this one.” (Acts 4:12)
The Bible tells us that the purpose for Jesus coming into the world is to save sinners. But what did He save us from? Why did we need saving? When sin entered creation, a ripple effect of brokenness and death spread througout the world. This caused a big gap between humanity and God. They went from walking closely with Him in the Garden to being separated from Him.
People couldn’t see God anymore and they needed interpreters to get messages from Him (the prophets). But God promised that one day He would make a way for all people to have full access to Him again – God promised to send a hero that could save us. Through Jesus, we can live a full life and walk in our created purpose: To glorify God and bring His Kingdom to Earth. Through Jesus we have a hope and a calling.
Saviour
Prayer: Thank you for the amazing grace You have shown me, God. You sent Jesus to save me from the grip of sin and brokenness and You have given me hope. You gave me a new heart and a new life. Now, I can live with You and bring Your Kingdom to Earth.
Challenge: Write down three things that Jesus saved you from. (If you are unsure, pray and ask God to show you where your life would have been if you didn’t have His mercy and grace)
