‘Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.’ – Corinthians 13:4
Think of a lion family – there is a father, a mother, and their cubs, all of whom are lions but have different roles to fulfill. Even when the family hunts together, they don’t all perform the same tasks. Perhaps there’s one lion in the family who is the fastest and chases after the prey, while the strongest lion helps to prevent the prey from escaping once caught. Each lion has different responsibilities and strengths, just like we, as people, do.
Unfortunately, we have grown accustomed to comparing ourselves to others and feeling envious of what they have. This jealousy has turned us into resentful individuals. We all have unique gifts and roles in God’s kingdom, but when we see others thriving in their gifts, we start to resent them and wish we could have what they have rather than be content with our blessings. This reveals our lack of gratitude for what God has given us.
It demonstrates a lack of love, as described in the book of Corinthians. Jealousy leaves us bitter and damages our relationships with others. Instead of wishing ill and becoming frustrated when others achieve success, let us train ourselves to celebrate their victories as our own and find peace in knowing that what God hasn’t given us is not necessary for our lives. Instead, let us acknowledge what we have and thank God for it. If we truly need something, we can turn to God and ask Him to bless us according to His will and purpose.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I humbly come before You and ask for the grace to cultivate a grateful heart. Please help me in moments of envy and jealousy to redirect my focus towards praising You for the blessings You have bestowed upon others rather than dwelling on myself for not having it. Grant me a love that rejoices in the success of others and a willingness to support and assist them without reservation. I pray all of this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Challenge: Take a moment to identify situations in which you feel envy and jealousy towards others. Is it when browsing social media or comparing yourself to others? Whatever the case, bring it before the Lord and actively practice gratitude by thanking God for all you have when you feel jealous.
