1 Timothy 1:19
19 Continue to have faith and do what you know is right. Some people have rejected this, and their faith has been shipwrecked.
You’ve probably heard of the Titanic? It was a big ship that was going to take many people from England to America and back again. The engineers who worked on it said that the ship would never sink, yet it hit an iceberg nonetheless and unfortunately it meant that many people died that day.
Sometimes we do the same thing: We believe that the little things that we do and the obstacles in our way will not have an effect on the bigger picture. Paul warns Timothy that the small things actually do matter – and that if we push aside our conscience, our faith will become ‘shipwrecked’.
Often it will be necessary for us to hold on tightly to what we know is true and right. If we hold fast in faith, we will not fool ourselves to think that everything will be okay if we can ignore the voice of our conscience and the voice of the Holy Spirit.
Is your Titanic sinking or sailing?
Prayer: Lord, I want to hold firmly onto my faith because I love you very much. May I hear your voice clearly in my life every day. I do not want to ignore it.
Challenge: Make a list of the things that divert your attention from God every now and then. It will help you to be alert when it occurs again. And then you can readjust your course in time to avoid shipwreck.
