“You use steel to sharpen steel, and one friend sharpens another” – Proverbs 27:17
“Friends come and friends go, but a true friend sticks by you like family” – Proverbs 18:24
True friends reflect God’s heart and is an example of His grace. We face a lot of trials and tribulations nowadays, and Satan doesn’t fight fair. A friend who has your back and helps you back on your feet can be your cornerstone, someone to help you push through hard times. There are times where you just want a kind word, or a shoulder to cry on. What better place to turn to than a friend? To check whether your friendship is a godly one, look at the ABC’s- you Always: Build each other up, Cheer each other on, and Draw each other near to Jesus.
While fools bring you down, friends take you forward. A good friend will encourage you to grow and become a better version of yourself. A friendship from Jesus is one of the greatest gifts we could ever receive, and something we should cultivate daily. Growing in your Christianity is easier when you do it with a good friend by your side. You can pray with each other and push each other to breakthroughs.
While it’s amasing to have godly friends, it’s also important to reflect upon yourself to make sure you fit the criteria as well. Are you encouraging, hopeful, and upbuilding? Of course, we don’t have to be perfect, but we can’t expect our friends to carry the relationship while we sit back and not do anything. Put effort into being a good friend, and you’ll see how your relationships improve considerably.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once spoke some true words when he said that to have a friend, is to be a friend. Talk to your friends and see where you can help each other. Strive to live like Jesus and grow in your relationship with Him and your friendships.
