Having Your Nose In The Bible

‘Christ’s message in all its richness must live in your hearts. Teach and instruct one another with all wisdom. Sing psalms, hymns, and sacred songs; sing to God with thanksgiving in your hearts.’Colossians 3:16

Bible study sounds easy, but most of the time we have no idea where to start and what to do.

Why do we read Bible?

We do Bible study to get to know God’s word. He left the Bible for us to study while He is gone. Every question or problem you have CAN be answered by the Bible. We also read the Bible to be better equipped for when we face temptations in our daily lives. Then it will be easier to act correctly in certain situations.

When do we read Bible?

Bible study is not something you need two hours for, daily. It can be as simple as 10 minutes of reading, after which you record your thoughts and questions. You can study the Bible, no matter how good or bad your day was. A Bible verse will lighten a bad mood and improve a good mood! If you’re facing some trials, the Bible is a good place to look for answers.

How do we read the Bible?

It’s very easy: get your Bible and read! Chances are you’ll have a few questions, or a special verse might stand out for you. It’s helpful to keep your journal, a pen, and some markers close to your Bible. You can mark things you want to focus on and write down your questions. Remember: it’s okay if you don’t know something. You can ask a pastor, parent, teacher or friend – anyone who knows more about the subject than you.

A good Bible study method is one called HEAR.
H- Highlight what stands out to you.
E- Explain. Get someone to explain the verse, or you can explain it so someone else
A- Apply the verse to your life.
R- Respond to what you read. It doesn’t help if we read, but don’t react(do)!

As you read your Bible more and more, you will start to see the impact on your daily life. You’ll be more peaceful, handle bad situations with more grace, and even start to stress less. The Bible is a great gift that we have; and we should use it as much as we can.

Having Your Nose In The Bible

Prayer: God, thank you for giving us the Bible. I pray that I’ll use the knowledge it offers to equip myself for this life, and to get to know You better. Please send the Holy Spirit to guide me and give me wisdom to understand Your Word. Amen.

Challenge: The easiest books in the Bible to read are the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). Choose one and read it using the HEAR method. Write your questions down and ask someone about them. Look out for special verses that you can apply in your life.
