‘Children, obey your parents because you are Christians. This is the right thing to do. “Honor your father and mother that everything may go well for you, and you may have a long life on earth.” This is an important commandment with a promise.’ – Ephesians 6:1-3
“Where there’s a will, there’s a way.” This is a well-known expression, and it is true. The power of our will is like a diamond, not easily broken. Take, for example, Wilbur and Orville Wright, these two brothers took four years of research and development to build the first powered Aeroplan called the “Wright Flyer” in 1903. The Spitfire build in 1938 took 13 000 man-hours to build. The end result was perfect; Man achieved flight. All the above achievements are outstanding; however, none is possible without
willpower, hard work, and determination. The will that succeeds is disciplined.
We cannot expect success in life if we cannot be disciplined. But where does discipline start? Are we born disciplined? No, discipline is learned! God helps us to learn to be disciplined also in our families.
Our parents must guide, protect and slowly “train“us by giving us progressively more and more responsibility. This then increases our independence more and more. Remember, you have the privilege of learning from your parents’ mistakes so that you can do better one day. Discipline is your ability to learn from the consequences of your choices and then take responsibility for them. It does not mean never making mistakes but learning from them.
May you learn and grow through your relationship with your parents as God intended it, and may you succeed through a disciplined will cultivated by this relationship.
God’s Success Plan
Prayer: Lord, will you help me to honor my parents, even though they may not be perfect. Teach me through our relationship and help my parents with their responsibilities and challenges. I ask this in the Name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Challenge: Take some time to think about the promise of God regarding your commitment to honoring your parents. Learn from their mistakes.
