1 Samuel 16:6-7
6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab, and he thought, “Surely the Lord has appointed this person standing here before him.” 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t look at how handsome Eliab is or how tall he is, because I have not chosen him. God does not see the same way people see. People look at the outside of a person, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
When Samuel started looking for the king that would take Saul’s place in the Israelite nation, his first instinct was to look for the biggest, strongest, fiercest, and best looking one out of the bunch. But God didn’t think that way.
Instead it was David who was going to be chosen. David was a small guy with lots of guts, but when it came to his physique, he really didn’t measure up to his brothers. Most of us are surrounded every day with people who are ‘better’ than us in many ways. But God doesn’t make comparisons, he looks at the heart of a person.
Next time you are tempted to believe that you are not good enough, you can stand up straight and know that God doesn’t pick the ‘prettiest’/‘strongest’. His love stretches wide enough for everyone.
God looks at our heart
Prayer: Lord, sometimes I feel like I don’t really measure up to the people around me. Please help me to understand that You love me for me and have created me in Your image.
Challenge: Write down your 3 favourite things about yourself. Know that God would love you even if it weren’t for how awesome you are.
