‘Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love.’ – 1 John 4:8
The concept of love is both complex and multifaceted. In the Bible, the word “love” appears over 500 times, highlighting the importance of this concept in our understanding of God and our relationship with Him. One of the most profound statements about the nature of God is found in 1 John 4:8, which states, “Anyone who does not love does not know God because God IS love.”
The essence of this verse is that God’s very nature is characterised by love. It is not just that God loves us, but rather that love is an intrinsic part of who He is. This means that God’s love is not dependent on anything we do or say nor limited by our human limitations. His love is eternal, infinite, unchanging, and extended to all of us regardless of our circumstances, status, or past mistakes.
In John 3:16, you can read that “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” This truth is seen most clearly in the life and death of Jesus Christ. The ultimate expression of God’s love for you was demonstrated in the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, where He bore the punishment for your sins and reconciled you to God.
God Is Love
