“Whoever wants to be great must become a servant. Whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave. That is what the Son of Man has done: He came to serve, not to be served—and then to give away his life in exchange for many who are held hostage.” – Mark 10:43-45
Have you ever heard of the word calling before? Followers of Jesus have believed for many years that we receive a calling when we come to faith. This is not just a random idea but it is found in the Bible.
Although, people can get tripped up when they focus too much on uncovering their own part to play, their own personal calling – there is one bigger calling that we all have in common: To bring God glory. The Kingdom of God does not work in the same way that the world does. It is more like the opposite!
Today’s verse is a great example of this: greatness means putting yourself second. This is also what Paul wrote about when he said we were called to be free (Galatians 5:13) – but we are not supposed to misuse this freedom. We are called and empowered by God – but we should not forget what it is about. But instead, we should be generous with everything because we received it all from God (1 Peter 4:10) “That way, God’s bright presence will be evident in everything through Jesus, and he’ll get all the credit as the One mighty in everything—encores to the end of time.”
Called To Serve
Gebed: Thank you, God, for calling me to make a difference. I know that Your Kingdom is upside down and it works very differently than the world. Would you teach me to become great in your Kingdom, to be servant-hearted and generous? Amen.
Uitdaging: Think of a situation where you can make yourself the least – and put someone else above yourself – today. This won’t feel natural, but it will be so worth it!
